Community Theatre Star
Maxwell (Max) Mander
Max Mander has more than fifty years' experience in Victorian non-professional theatre. This experience encompasses directing, backstage management, lighting design and operation, set design, construction and sound engineering. His initial love of theatre and stagecraft was first expressed through organising school concerts while a student at the former Caulfield Technical College, following his return from service in World War II. His associated employment as a Draftsman for British Petroleum in Melbourne enabled him to establish a theatre company for employees to present one-act plays at an employer-provided lunch-time theatre. Max was also introduced to directing, set design, stage lighting and sound engineering.
For thirty years Max was involved with the Malvern Theatre Company, where he oversaw the company's technical emergence from an amateur company performing in a former church hall to a point where the company possessed facilities which Max had personally built - the present two storey backstage area, the Bio-Box suspended above the auditorium as well as plans for raking the theatre floor. A Life Member of Malvern Theatre Company, Max's contribution is acknowledged on a brass plate in the company's boardroom. Max also held a seat on the Board of Management for many years.
In his eighties, Max began designing and building sets and creating lighting designs and special effects for companies such as Mitcham Theatre Company, Doncaster Playhouse and Waverley Theatre Company. Max began to teach eight week courses in Lighting Design, which were well attended. His teachings led to him providing professional advice for government funded projects such as the building of the Cranbourne Arts Centre and involvement with the Mordialloc Theatre Company. Max has also run a music group for gay persons for approximately twenty-three years and in recent years has designed and drawn the new Bio Box for Beaumaris Theatre.
Max's awards include:
The Colin Cave Memorial Prize (Malvern Theatre, 1979)
Board Of Management Award for Construction of New Bio-Box (Malvern, 1996)
Best Lighting Design for The Fantasticks (Malvern, 1997)
Best Lighting Design for The Woman in Black (Malvern, 1998)
Best Lighting Design for A Touch Of Silk (Malvern, 2000)
Best Lighting Design for Sylvia (Malvern, 2001)
For Professional Advice on the purchase/installation of equipment for the newly purpose-built Cranbourne community Theatre (2002)
Best Lighting Design for Playing Sinatra (Mordialloc, 2003)
Best Lighting Design for All My Sons (Mordialloc, 2004)
Best Lighting Design for You Can't Take It With You (Mordialloc, 2005)
Three years ago, Max founded an organization called The Theatre Technicians (Vic), devoted to supporting the 'backstage workers' in Victorian non-professional theatre. His interesting monthly newsletter often reviews a particular company or performance venue and offers advice on solving technical and set construction problems. These could include how to make rain, flickering fires, through to preventing accidents. The group is free to join and any interested person who has an email address can request to be put on the mailing list. Just email Max at
maxem@westnet.com.au
Max Mander does not know the meaning of "cannot do". He can still climb the heights of the flies in an age where so few youngsters can work at such levels above the stage without a crane or a net. Congratulations on your marvellous contribution to
Victorian Non-Professional Theatre, Max.
(Thanks to Dr Roger J. Ustick for his assistance with compiling this story on Max
Mander)

EDUCATING RITA - Lilydale Athenaeum Theatre Company
Educating Rita is a thought provoking and entertaining play, with author Willy Russell's story exploring the relationship between student and teacher. Hairdresser Rita attends Open University seeking self-improvement and escape from her circumstances and the disenchanted, alcohol-dependent Professor Frank Bryant is assigned as her tutor. We share the gradual development of their relationship and the consequences of Rita's transformation into educated confidence, whilst at the same time becoming aware of Frank's difficulty in coping with her changed ways.
Directed by Alan Burrows, Educating Rita is another high standard production presented by the Lilydale Athenaeum Theatre Company, playing most nights to capacity audiences. Graham McGuffie's impressive, well-designed set (a university tutorial room) contributes authentic atmosphere to the production. Experienced actors David McLean as Frank and Angela Glennie as Rita beautifully portray their roles, carrying off this 'two hander' play with skill and expertise. Sylvia Carr and Jan Bird do great work with 'wardrobe and hair' as do dressers Meredith Lawrence, Catherine Carr, Jacqui Hoeboer, Alisha Kenwright and Jessica Taylor. Rita's quick and varied wardrobe changes not only add visual interest to the play, but also cleverly depict her gradual transformation on her journey of self-discovery. Lighting by Michael Gerrish and Colin Mortley is stylishly subtle and scenes flow smoothly under the stage management of Larissa Cardwell.
The Athenaeum Theatre in Castella St., Lilydale is a magnificently restored, comfortable and atmospheric performing venue, with front-of-house staff never failing to extend a warm welcome to patrons. Congratulations to all involved with this enjoyable production.
Educating Rita can be seen until March 24 at 8.30pm (sherries at 8pm) at the Athenaeum Theatre, Castella St., Lilydale. Good seats still available on Wednesday, March 21. Tickets: Adults $20, Conc. $15.00 Bookings: 9735 1777

Community Theatre Star: Doug Bennett
Doug Bennett (Director, Set Designer, Actor)
Theatre has been a very important part of Doug Bennett's life since he was five years old. Doug says "I contracted the virus from my father Bill, who is still acting at the age of eighty seven. I can vividly remember discarded stage sets in the driveway and drunken actors in the living room for 'last night' parties."
Doug's first real acting role was at fifteen years of age at the National Theatre in The Facts of Life and he went on to act in a variety of plays, with dad Bill as producer and director. Doug married Faye in October, 1965 and says they embarked on the adventure of a lifetime to the UK and North America, returning to Australia four years later. He resumed his interest in theatre, acting with the Viaduct Theatre (now Polyglot) in South Yarra and then with Heidelberg Theatre Company. Doug joined Actors Equity, secured an agent and successfully worked professionally as an actor in stage, film and television. After five years of acting, Doug's interest turned to stage direction and since 1974 he has directed and designed sets for approximately 65 plays and musicals for various Melbourne community theatre companies including Encore, Lilydale Athenaeum, Eltham, Brighton, Williamstown, Peridot, Theatre 21 (Trak), Heidelberg, 1812, Spectrum, Waverley, Malvern, Whitehorse Musical, Leongatha Lyric and Mitcham Theatre Companies.
In 2006 Doug designed and directed The Crucible for Mordialloc Theatre Company and The Philadelphia Story for the Athenaeum Theatre Company, Lilydale.
Doug Bennett's name is synonymous with top quality and award-winning productions. He has been appointed as a VDL (Victorian Drama League) adjudicator for 2007, and will also be directing a play for the Athenaeum Theatre Company, Lilydale, later in the year. Congratulations and thanks Doug for sharing your expertise and inspiring energies to make a splendid contribution to Melbourne community theatre.
(Footnote: Doug's father, Bill Bennett, was featured as the Melbourne Observer's Community Theatre Star on February 8, 2006
