Mountain District Musical Society's production of Annie
The Mountain District Musical Society is presenting Annie at the Karralyka Theatre, Ringwood until June 17. The show is entertainingly co-directed by Chris Shute and Kim Annette and features an enthusiastic cast of delightfully varying ages. Bethany Fisher as Annie is confident and endearing, with strong acting skills for one so young. Her fellow orphans are also terrific, as are the urchins. They all sustain their roles well throughout the show and can sing, act and present their well-rehearsed routines with precision. Alannah Guthrie-Jones is theatrically entertaining as the villainous Miss Hannigan and Bec Alexander gives an elegant, stylish portrayal as Grace. Adrian Carr plays an intriguingly charismatic Oliver Warbucks with some great comedy delivery. He has a sparkling rapport with Annie. Jonathan Guthrie-Jones as Rooster is a talented performer with dynamic stage presence, who works well with Katie Cullinan as his partner-in-crime Lily, and also (his real-life sister) Miss Hannigan. Don Ellis as Roosevelt and Terry Cox as Drake perform well, as does Geoff Collier as Bert Healey and Tom Ashby as Fred McCracken. The Ensemble and support performers in their various roles reveal many experienced and talented performers who sell their songs and present Kim Annette's effective choreography with energetic polish. Sandy the dog is played by Molly. Particular mention should be made of the lovely harmony work from Georgie Cutler, Caroline Jacobs, Carly Hobbs and Amy Clarke as the Boylan Sisters. A personal view, but I would prefer not to hear the orchestra discordantly warming up and chatting whilst the audience waits for the show's magic to begin. Once Chris Shute's orchestra commenced rendering the familiar tunes, we were immediately transported to the nostalgia and optimistic delight of Annie. Congratulations to Mountain District Musical Society for a most enjoyable production. Bookings: 9758 6859.

Carmen - the Musical - presented by Babirra Theatre
In their 50th anniversary year, Babirra Music Theatre opened last Friday night with Carmen - the Musical at the Whitehorse Centre, Nunawading. Based on music from the opera by Georges Bizet, which premiered in 1875, Carmen - the Musical has been adapted and arranged by Bobbie Field with book and lyrics by David Badger. Babirra's production is directed by Jaison Hoernel with choreography by Kerryn Lilley. From the moment Musical Director Basil Hawkins makes his stunning onstage entrance in red-lined coat and his orchestra commences delivery of the Prelude with sensitivity, drama and passion, there is anticipation of a night of musical splendor - and indeed it is. The compelling music combines beautifully with the impressively strong vocal talents of mezzo-soprano Fiona Keys (Carmen), soprano Nicole Wallace (Micaela), tenor Ben Logan (Don Jose) and bass baritone Zak Brown (Escamillo). Good performances are also given by Felicity Eastwood-Tromp (Mercedes), Jo Buckingham (Frasquita), Cameron Waters (Morales), Bill Connellan (Zuniga), Simon Evans (Remandado) and Ryan Jacobs (Dancaro). The story is set in Seville, Spain. The Ensemble performers enhance the production both visually and musically with their energetic performances, including the familiar piece the Habanera. Although Aussie dialogue accents are heard from some performers, the atmospheric sets designed by John Lewis and effective costumes designed by Maddy Connellan, continue to reassure that we are definitely in Spain. It is great to see children involved in some scenes and they add favorably to the reality. The Flamenco dancers are striking, vibrant and colorful. Special mention should be made of the superb lighting design by Jason Bovaird, which perfectly sets the contrasting moods of the story. Congratulations also to the front-of-house team who, with the lovely touch of wearing red rose corsages on opening night, were efficient, warm and welcoming to an appreciative audience.
Carmen - the Musical is a most enjoyable, musically-strong production and continues its season until June 10. Bookings: 9885 9654.

Melbourne Observer reader Mrs Jessie Lynch from Clifton Hill has written to say how much she and her husband enjoyed the Anzac Day production of Ginger Mick at Gallipoli at the Fitzroy Town Hall and to let us know that the show is being presented again in the city by the company Petty Traffikers from May 23 to June 11.
Ginger Mick at Gallipoli is an original dramatisation of C.J. Dennis's tale of Ginger Mick and the Anzacs in Turkey and is a tribute to "the boys who took the count" in the Great War. Adapted from the book diggers famously carried in their breast pockets in the trenches of WW1, the play recounts the acts of courage, as well as the horrors unique to war. Larrikin humour is combined with pathos, from the particular perspective of Ginger Mick.
Petty Traffikers is a theatre company committed to theatrical adaptations of Australia's classic literary heritage. Past shows include The Sentimental Bloke, The Bush Undertaker and The Drover's Wife. Directed by Stewart Morritt, Ginger Mick at Gallipoli can be seen at Fortyfivedownstairs, 45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne from Tuesday, May 23 to June 11 at 7.30pm, Sundays at 5pm. Tickets: $27 (full) and $23 (conc). Bookings:(03) 9662 9966.

The Scarlet Pimpernel - CLOC Musical Theatre
"They seek him here, they seek him there…..". CLOC Musical
Theatre's production of The Scarlet Pimpernel opened last week at the Alexander
Theatre, Monash University, Clayton and it is indeed worthwhile to catch this
elusive character before the season finishes on May 27. The story is set in 1794
at the peak of the French Revolution. The classic adventure novel written by
Baroness Orczy in 1905 has been acknowledged as the predecessor to dual identity
heroes such as Superman, Zorro and Batman. With book and lyrics by Nan Knighton
and music by Frank Wildhorn, CLOC's production of The Scarlet Pimpernel is
stylishly directed by Chris Bradtke and offers a smorgasbord of charm, romance,
comedy, drama, suspense and intrigue, smattered with nostalgic swashbuckling
action thrills. Toby Truscott portrays the noble Sir Percy Blakeney (aka the
daring Scarlet Pimpernel), Suzanne Gedicke is the exquisite Marguerite and Shaun
Kingma plays the villainous Chauvelin. All three performers use their top
all-round talents to superbly present their roles. Percy's fellow aristocratic
adventurers, including Chris Buchanan as the sensitively appealing Armand, give
lively, entertaining performances, including the show-stopper "The Creation
of Man". Supporting and ensemble performers also present strong and
versatile performances, contrasting in style between the scenes of English high
society and France during the Revolution. The lavish costumes are designed by
John Azzopardi, the magnificent, often breathtaking sets are designed by Brenton
Staples and Stelios Karagiannis' lighting design perfectly creates moods. The
diversely styled music is beautifully rendered by musical director Michael
Loughlin's orchestra and Rachael Whitelaw's stage movement is effective and
well-rehearsed. CLOC Musical Theatre was established in 1964 as the Cheltenham
Light Opera Company, performing in local halls. Over the years the company has
developed to achieve status as one of Victoria's premier non-professional
theatre companies, with shows readily comparable to many seen in professional
theatre. Congratulations to all concerned on this splendid production of The
Scarlet Pimpernel. It is refreshing, exciting and terrific entertainment. For
ticket bookings call1300 362 547.

Catchment Players - My Fair Lady
Catchment Players, the largest non-professional theatre company in Melbourne's north, is presenting My Fair Lady until May 20 at the Darebin Arts and Entertainment Centre, Preston, under the direction of Michael Blake.
My Fair Lady is based on George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, written in 1912. Shaw based this play on the ancient Greek myth of Pygmalion and Galatea and in his version, Pygmalion became Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle his Galatia. My Fair Lady features music by Frederick Lowe and book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, combined with the wit of George Bernard Shaw.
Shelley Anthony sparkles as Eliza Doolittle in this production. She has a beautiful singing voice, is a skilled dancer and her competent acting ability credibly transforms her from guttersnipe to high society lady. She has good comic timing too. Arno Vann is an articulate Henry Higgins and Bruce Packard is well cast as Colonel Pickering. Will Deumer as the rascally Alfred P. Doolittle is dynamic and entertaining and Adrian Price is charming as Freddy Eynsford-Hill. The supporting actors and ensemble give good, energetic performances, there are some great harmonies from the male singers in particular, and the dance routines choreographed by Nathan Firmin are effective and entertaining. The costumes designed by Allan Paul are striking, colorful and stylish. Performers are immaculately groomed where appropriate, with careful attention given to hairstyles. The Ascot scene in particular creates a stunning visual impact.
The first class orchestra for this show, under the talented direction of Juliette Maxwell, more than meets musical expectations when playing the familiar and captivating melodies. Staging My Fair Lady means coping with varied scene changes and set designer Andrew Bellchamber's impressive and clever sets most effectively meet the production challenges. Catchment Players is a well-established and extremely well-managed company who should be congratulated on a most enjoyable production and wonderful start to their thirty-first year. For bookings ring 9416 8933 or AH 9460 1857.

Community Theatre Star Tribute to Cenarth Fox
When playwright and musician Cenarth Fox watched Gordon MacRae ride into view singing Oh What a Beautiful Morning at the movies in 1959, thus began his interest in musical theatre. Cen quickly learnt the lyrics of every Oklahoma! song and a few years later wrote his first musical.
He performed in plays and musicals at teachers' college, university and with community theatre companies. In 1974 he became a director with the then Westernport Light Opera Society and suggested they tackle something new. To Cen's delight they staged his musical The Originals with great success in Koo Wee Rup, Pakenham and Melbourne.
Cen then formed a company and for the next five years many actors, designers, instrumentalists, technicians and directors worked on six new Australian shows. Cen's company held art and craft exhibitions, premiered a new Australian movie, recorded fifteen episodes of a children's radio show, toured a 17 piece big band and staged pantomimes in shopping centres.
Schools soon became interested in Cen's shows, seeking material written especially for young voices, then community theatre companies expressed interest. At first all productions were presented in Australia, then teachers and directors went overseas taking shows with them. Today the Internet announces Cen's shows and they have been staged in more than forty countries, including the U.S.A., Russia and Saudi Arabia.
Since 2003, Encore Theatre in Clayton has premiered four of Cen's shows, including Moving On, The Real Sherlock Holmes, Resting and How to Enjoy Your Own Funeral.
This year Methodist Ladies' College will stage Cen's prize-winning musical Suburban Circus before taking the show on tour to Vietnam.
Cenarth has made an outstanding contribution to community theatre over the years as performer, musical director and playwright. His scripts are free to peruse by email from his website

The dawn of a new beginning in Williamstown
Williamstown Musical Theatre Company launched the company's revival last weekend by presenting their dynamic variety concert, Work in Progress. The recently renovated Mechanics Institute has a colorful history, originally being a stopping off place for sailors docking at Williamstown in the early 1900's. Dame Nellie Melba also performed there. For fifty years this location on the corner of Melbourne Rd. and Electra St. has been the performing venue for the Williamstown Light Opera Company, one of Melbourne's oldest musical theatre companies. After a break from the theatre community due to upgrading and renovating facilities, the company now has a new name and aims to establish, develop, nurture and encourage the performing arts and musical theatre in the City of Hobsons Bay and the broader community.
The talented, youthful cast of Work in Progress did an excellent job in setting a high performance standard and launching the new company. Special mention should be made of the vocal skills of Ang Cuy, George Tsatsakis, Katy Roose, Erin Marr, Tyson Legg, Tim Barsby and Renee Pope-Munro, the articulate and elegant compering from Sophie McKellar, the well-choreographed dance routines, the terrific band under the direction of Adrian Szondy and the vocal harmonies performed by seven males in Is You Is. Congratulations to Williamstown Musical Theatre Company on their new beginning. This inaugural concert showcased an energetic and talented young cast who will enthusiastically lead the company into its new future. Do watch out for their next show.

Director Peter Fitzpatrick and his highly talented cast and crew have recreated Jonathan Larson's prize-winning script, score and lyrics into a powerfully emotional rock musical. Based on Giacomo Puccini's classic 1896 opera La Boheme, Rent is a musical for its time and beyond as 'Generation X' young people struggle to voice their rights, find love and achieve their hopes and dreams. The story also compassionately presents issues such as homelessness, AIDS and drug addiction. Musical Supervisor Kevin Purcell and his team have extracted excellent vocal and musical qualities from the cast and orchestra and Roman Berry's choreography is sharp, effective and never boring. The high energy levels of this youthful cast are terrific and particularly strong performances were enjoyed from Adrian Li Donni (Angel), Paul David Watson (Mark), Cole Rintoul (Roger), Erin Keleher (Joanne), Jessica Featherby (Mimi), Phil Haby (Tom) and Jessica Enes (Maureen). A clever multi-dimensional set gives opportunity for various areas of action, ensuring constant visual interest. It was puzzling to return from interval to find performers standing around in the audience, some out of character, until Act 2 commenced. Front of House crew members deserve praise for their friendly efficiency and courtesy.
Congratulations to Stella Entertainment for a first-rate production of this Victorian amateur premiere season of Rent. The company is relatively new, but has quickly risen to join the ranks of Victoria's top non-professional musical theatre companies.
The storyline of Rent might not be everybody's cup of tea, but this production with its impressively talented local young singers, actors, dancers and musicians is a special theatre experience.

This week's Community Theatre Star tribute is to veteran community and professional theatre performer and radio broadcaster, Bill Bennett.
At 87 Bill follows a hectic schedule with his concert party, which travels to entertain and delight members of senior citizens' clubs and nursing home residents. Bill wonders if he may be Melbourne's oldest radio presenter as he still hosts two separate programs on Southern FM 88.3, including his long-running theatre-chat show.
Bill's professional work includes the TV series Blue Heelers, Cop Shop, Matlock and Division Four. In recent years Bill's advertising work included an ad for a bank where he featured in a red Ferrari car and also an ad for McDonald's.
Bill's first role was in an English comedy titled Bird in Hand and then he went on to job plays by Shakespeare, Shaw, Ibsen and Noel Coward. Bill says that in those days there was no NIDA or the School of Film and Television. "You learned on the job".
Bill keeps fit with Square-dancing which he has been enjoying for forty-five years and at home it is Pretty Paws the cat who calls the shots.
Over the years Bill has shared his talent and expertise with many companies and countless non-professional theatre actors and brought much pleasure to audiences with his entertaining performances. Congratulations Bill and thanks from all your fans.

This week's Community Theatre Star is Yvonne Goodman who, at 78, shares her talent and decades of professional experience producing shows for members of the Warrandyte Senior Citizens Club.
Born in Richmond, Yvonne commenced dancing lessons at 2 ˝ with Ivy Emms, performing in pantomimes at the Tivoli and other Melbourne theatres until 11 years old. Yvonne recalls performing with Roy Rene (Mo), an aerial acrobatic troupe The Flying Warrens, Lulu Fanning, Doris Whimp, Queenie Paul and Mike Connors. Studying music whilst attending St. Ignatius Primary School in Richmond, Yvonne continued her studies in Sydney when the family moved north and also studied singing for five years at the Conservatorium of Music in New South Wales. A 14 she started teaching dancing at the school owned by Queenie Paul and Mike Connor and began 'working the traps' around Sydney in nightclubs (including working with Abe Saffron), dancing in the Tivoli ballet and also for twelve months with
JCW.
Yvonne then developed her own act, which comprised playing the piano accordion, singing, dancing and comedy. She successfully performed on the Club Circuit and when TV arrived in 1956, danced with Judd Lane on Bandstand, as a Go-Go dancer on Johnny O'Keefe's show and performed in Melbourne with Bob Horsfall. Yvonne later performed in the Leagues Clubs with her act and appeared on the same program as the Bee Gees, Kamahl and Frank Ifield.
Yvonne married in the 1960's and lived and performed in New Zealand for a year, before settling in Ashburton and establishing a stagecraft school. Following the death of her husband in 1975, Yvonne and her daughter Maryanne and son Rory moved to Heathmont and started a new school of stagecraft.
One of Yvonne's successful students is her talented God-son Brendan Scott, who commenced singing and dancing lessons at the age of four. Brendan now plays Yvonne's piano-accordion in his act and Yvonne is thrilled to see the instrument "still living".
It was Brendan who suggested to Belle Wilkie of the Warrandyte Senior Citizens' Club that Yvonne would be ideal to take over teaching their tap class. Musical productions directed by Yvonne have since developed.
A true stage trooper, after a serious cancer operation Yvonne decided to test if she "wasn't dead", and in 2002 successfully auditioned in Hampton as the pianist Mrs Fraser in Stepping Out, delighting audiences with her entertaining performance. (this show's director was Cheryl Threadgold - how lucky were we to have such a superb, all-round performer as Yvonne!)
Yvonne says she now takes "one day at a time" and thoroughly enjoys working with her Senior Citizens' members, offering encouragement and the advice that performing is all about "creating an illusion".

This week's Community Theatre Star tribute is to Geelong Repertory Theatre,
which this year celebrated its 73rd anniversary. Now playing a vital role in their local heritage, the company was formed in 1932 by Dulcie Meakin as the Geelong Repertory Society, performing an average of seven plays a year - from melodrama to the classics - in the old GAMA Theatre. Later performing in the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, the company purchased "Henry's" in 1981. This was a wood and timber store in Geelong West and was initially used as office space, wardrobe, rehearsal space, workshop area and meeting place and is known as the Lilian Stott centre. The Woodbin rehearsal space was later converted into a small, intimate and versatile theatre. The inaugural production was in 1989 and since then the Woodbin Theatre has been a part of Geelong's thriving theatre scene. Congratulations to Geelong Repertory Theatre for this marvellous achievement.

Gordon initially founded the ACE Theatre Company, giving opportunities for performers in the Aspendale, Chelsea and Edithvale areas to be involved in theatre productions. Since his retirement to Hastings three years ago, Gordon in conjunction with Edwin Creely, has founded the Pelican Theatre Company which has just staged its sixth production. He has also formed the Pelican Youth Theatre, a youth drama group who contribute to writing their own plays as well as performing. With assistance from his wife Cynthia who makes all the costumes and is also a musical theatre performer, Gordon's productions bring all ages together from the orchestra to performers, backstage and front-of-house crews. Gordon has created true community theatre in Hastings. A remarkable effort in a relatively short time.
