Warrandyte '55 Plus' Variety Group
Last Thursday the beautifully costumed Warrandyte '55 Plus' Variety Group presented their entertaining show Everything Old is New Again to an appreciative audience at the Warrandyte Senior Citizens' clubrooms. Under the direction of super-talented Yvonne Goodman, the performers sang, tap-danced and presented sketches, paying tribute to stars from Vaudeville days through the decades and a nice acknowledgement to the Melbourne Observer as well! Some key performers among the sparkling cast aged from early 50's to 86, included former Channel 9 and club singer Renee Rundell, Alan Spencer, Rob Collier, Frank O'Sullivan and musical director Belle Wilke. Yvonne says she aims to promote the senior citizens in the Warrandyte area and to "keep us all going". Congratulations to Yvonne and her Group for a happy, fun show, creating an afternoon filled with positive energies and goodwill, with a delicious afternoon tea as the finale. Those interested in joining the Warrandyte '55 Plus' Variety Group, either to perform or help with sewing or backstage, are welcome to call 9870 0379.

Review
Dirty Work at the Crossroads - Eltham Little Theatre
The hiss and hoorah fun of a melodrama entwined with music hall-style entertainment can be enjoyed at Eltham Little Theatre's latest production of Dirty Work at the Crossroads. Musical Director Ian Forsyth appears in a stunningly sequinned musically-themed vest and the opening song and dance number reveals a delightful assortment of variously aged performers, right down to young Victoria-Rose Fiddes' polished portrayal of Baby June.
Chairman Alan Currie personably introduces the glamorous card-girls, followed by the Aussie-flavoured melodrama, written by Bill Johnson. We meet the dastardly villain Munro Murgatroyd (well played by Travis Davies resplendent in red satin lined cloak), the innocent, sweet heroine Nellie Lovelace (appealingly portrayed by Alexandra Freedman-Davies), Nellie's true-love Adam Oakhart (a sincere portrayal from Daniel Kastropil), the conspiring Ida Rhinegold (an elegant, strong performance from Jean Russell) and the handsome, likeable Mookie Maguggins (credibly portrayed by the also vocally rich Alan Flint). Marilyn Pearce is charming as Mrs Lovelace and Glyn Wilson as the rich widow Mrs Upton Asterbilt and Jasmine Dare as her petulant daughter Leonie, impress with their strong acting skills. The versatile Ciara McKenna oozes personality-plus in her roles of Fleurette and a card-girl and Kristie Molnar immediately engages her audience with a terrific portrayal of Little Nell. Marlene Di Battista, Yu Chun Lin and the energetic and enthusiastic Ensemble present some great toe-tapping numbers. We are treated to magic tricks from Michael Fiddes and well-presented acrobatics also from Michael and Claude Di Battista. A highlight of the show is the entertaining, gutsy vocal item from Michelle Carr. The striking costumes are designed and realised by Bonnie Rothwell, Michelle Carr-Fiddes and Sue Mutavdzija and Mick Poor's set design works well. Congratulations to producer/choreographer Michelle Carr-Fiddes, director Cheryl Ballantine and Eltham Little Theatre for an entertaining, fun night presented in an atmospheric venue.
Dirty Work at the Crossroads runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8pm each week until December 2 at the Eltham Performing Arts Centre, 1602 Main Rd., Research. Tickets $16. BYO refreshments. Bookings: 9437 1574.

How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying
How to Succeed in Entertainment poses no problem to Babirra Music Theatre if their latest production, the snappy musical comedy How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, is any indication.
Based upon the book by Shepherd Mead, with book by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert and music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, the story follows the adventure of former window-cleaner J. Pierrepoint Finch into the world of commerce as he climbs the corporate ladder.
Director Di Shepherd has not missed any opportunity in the script to deliver humour and entertainment and her choreography, assisted by Albert Tapper, is slick, creatively devised, precise and well rehearsed. Musical director Graeme Burnham's orchestra compliments the story beautifully as they render the bright, upbeat tunes.
Talented all-round performer Jonathan Guthrie-Jones is terrific as the intrepid hero J. Pierrepoint Finch, using the flexibility of his rubbery face for varied expressions ranging from wickedness to outrageous confidence, humility and tenderness. Caroline Buckle delivers a polished performance as Finch's charming romantic lead, Rosemary and Ang Cuy oozes showmanship in the role of Smitty. There is never a dull moment watching James Cook's hilarious performance as the gangly, wimpy Frump and Clare Dea gives a first-class portrayal of the dizzy Hedy. Zak Brown (J.B. Biggley) admirably leads his executive team of equally strong, personable, all-round performers including Bill Connellan (Gatch), Craig Martin (Bratt), Albert Tapper (Mr Twimble), the vocally powerful Brigid B. DeNeefe (Miss Jones), Julia Konig (Miss Krumholtz), Wayne Motton (Ovington) and Alan Wright (Womper), supported by a talented Ensemble.
The stylish set is designed by Rebecca Dahl and blends corporate grey with bright colours pertinent to this fun show. The Men's Washroom set is a particularly clever design. The striking costumes designed by Maddy Connellan and Olwyn Beare add authenticity to the era and Jason Bovaird's lighting design effectively compliments the story. Stage Manager Michael Brasser's crew commendably works efficiently and quietly to unobtrusively effect scene changes.
Congratulations to Babirra Music Theatre on their 50th anniversary year and for presenting a slick, well staged, humour-filled show that is a real crowd-pleaser.

Cats: CLOC Musical Theatre
The rooftop set spectacularly appears during the Prologue. There is a feeling this show is going to be special, and indeed it is.
CLOC Musical Theatre opened last weekend with the Australasian Non-Professional Premiere of the theatrical phenomenon Cats. The season continues until October 14 at the Alexander Theatre, Monash University, Clayton. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and based on "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" by T.S. Eliot, the musical convincingly transports us into the fascinating world of felines to meet the varied and intriguing Jellicle Cats.
Lee Threadgold's splendid artistic direction, Tamara Finch's sharp, high energy choreography (including a dance smorgasbord of toe, tap, ballet, creative and often stunning acrobatics) and Martin Macaulay's impressive musical direction, team equally with Miranda Kalgovas' lavish costume design, John Burrett's creative set, Sandra Davies' slick stage management and Stelios Karagiannis' sensitive lighting design to present a powerfully dynamic interpretation. There are no individual stars in the mega-talented cast, with each cast member rendering an outstanding performance, whether vocal or dance and in many cases demonstrating remarkable versatility. Visual interest is sustained throughout the show, with clever use of the set and theatre for entrances and effects.
Without doubt, CLOC Musical Theatre is the 'purr-fect' company to stage this Australasian Non-professional Premiere of Cats. Congratulations to CLOC's cast and crew on a top show presented in true professional style. The company's first class front-of-house team will greet you until October 14 at the Alexander Theatre, Monash University, Clayton. Bookings: 1300 362547.
Rent
Altona City Theatre's impressive production of Rent runs until October 14 at the comfortable Altona City Theatre, 115 Civic Pde., Altona.
With book, music and lyrics by Jonathan Larsen, this rock musical is based on Puccini's classic 1896 opera La Boheme.
Director Anna Marinelli has created an atmospheric, down-to-earth, believable interpretation. The show's musical and vocal strengths are a credit to musical director Daniel Heskett.
The orchestra renders the musical score in superb fashion and full marks to James Holt's sound design for a well-balanced effect.
Ang Cuy is assistant director and assistant musical director. The talented cast works very well together, especially vocally. Particular mention should be made of the strong performances enjoyed from Tyson Legg (Mark), Rex Sutton (Roger), Tanya Smith (Mimi), Paul Scott Williams (Collins), Tim Barsby (Angel), Stuart Dodge (Benny), Narelle Bonnici (Joanna), Rebecca McGuinness (Maureen) and their support cast. Narelle and Rebecca's duet 'Take Me Or Leave Me' was a real show-stopper. Angel's death scene is poignantly portrayed and well acted by Tim Barsby.
The rich singing voices and fine acting skills of this new generation of emerging and established talented young performers should assure the welcome continuation of quality musical theatre in the future.
Choreographer Natalie Black has devised some dynamic movements for Angel and Mimi, which offer an entertaining diversion from the occasionally static nature of this version of the show.
The striking set designed by Dave Sutton is pleasingly functional for the cast and also audience-friendly.
As the story of Rent progresses, we share the struggle of young people to voice their rights, find love and achieve their hopes and dreams.
The story also presents issues such as homelessness, AIDS, drug addition and sexuality and could be confronting at times for some patrons.
Altona Theatre Com-pany's show is a special theatre experience, particularly musically. Congratulations to all concerned and it is hoped that the talented performers and musicians perform to full houses until the end of their season. Front-of-house management is friendly and efficient. Rent runs until October 14 at the Altona Civic Theatre,115 Civic Pde., Altona. Bookings: 0425 705 550.
Esme Melville
A memorial service was held on Monday at the Victorian College of the Arts for much-loved and respected actress Esme Melville. Esme's career spanned television, films and stage, including Consider Your Verdict, Homicide, Division 4, Bluey, Prisoner, The Flying Doctors, Sea Change, Blue Heelers, The Secret Life of Us, Crackerjack, Dimboola and Squizzy Taylor. In 2003 she won the best actress award at the Tropfest short-film festival for Forbidden. In 1964 Esme portrayed Marmee in Joy Mudge's production of Little Women at the Arts Theatre, Lonsdale St. and I played her daughter Amy. We caught up late last year when performing in the Short and Sweet Festival at the Arts Centre. Esme commented how much she enjoyed working with the young people of today - she felt there was so much to be learned from them. A very special person and performer who will be sadly missed.

Profile: George Foster
George Foster started in radio at age 14 as a member of the Flying Axehandles with Nicky and Nancy and one of the Chums. He went on to have his own radio show in Sydney, singing requests every Saturday night and was a regular on Dick Cranbourne's Country and Western Show on Sundays. Various club and radio engagements followed through the 50's and 60's, plus TV performances on IMT and Sunnyside Up. Illness then prevented George from singing for at least twenty years until a radio reunion with John McMahon in the early 1980's. In 1987 George's daughter Sue was associated with the Dandenong Light Opera Company (now Dandenong Theatre Company) and it was suggested that George audition for a show. He was cast as Lazar Wolf in Fiddler on the Roof, then the following year as Governor Lanson in The Tavern and has since performed in principal roles and chorus for over twenty DLOC shows, plus shows for CLOC, PLOS, MLOC and MOTTS. A true show-biz trouper, George brought the house down last year in Norman Yemm's Old Time Music Hall with his moving rendition of When I Grow Too Old to Dream, whilst confined to a wheelchair with ill health.
George says he has gained huge personal satisfaction and rewards from his association with community theatre. These include the opportunity to work with others with a common interest, enjoying personal support and friendships across generations and the sense of satisfaction that comes from entertaining others. Ultimately, George just loves to sing and finds community theatre a fantastic vehicle for that passion. He is proud that he can continue to contribute "even at my age" and appreciates being recognised for his talent, irrespective of age. George's grand-daughter, Melanie Foster is an established community theatre performer and George says that to be able to share his passion for singing with Mel and to have had great times performing in shows with her, has been the icing on the cake. George receives full support from wife Phil, who often works behind the scenes in various capacities. George Foster's professionalism, integrity, family values and happy manner are his trademark, providing inspiration and setting a fine example to performers of all ages. His beautiful singing voice has entertained thousands of theatregoers over the years. Thanks for your marvellous contribution to community theatre, George.

Profile: Danny Forward
Glenhuntly musician Danny Forward's twenty year musical dream will become a reality when Dreamchild: Alice's Musical Adventures, opens at Beaumaris Theatre, 82 Wells Road, Beaumaris on September 1.
Danny's script is an adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and his original score has evolved over twenty years. Danny says that he thought of adapting "Alice" into a musical back in 1984 when writing the music for his high school musical, Robin Hood, and began setting the nonsensical poems to music. The original lyrics and music in Dreamchild now span from "the early musings of a naïve seventeen-year-old to those of a more worldly-wise thirty-nine-year-old, where the ink is barely dry on the manuscript." Danny wanted to remain as true to the original text as possible, but says 'from page to stage' obviously necessitated some tweaking, none of which he believes compromises the essence of the book.
The score has also been influenced by Danny's thirteen years' stint in London, where his achievements include musical direction of 'Round Midnight', a Soho-based jazz combo, an Executive Committee position with Crusaid (the UK's leading HIV and AIDS charity) co-ordinating charity film previews, composer/pianist for City Lit College's (Covent Garden) production of Neil Simon's The Good Doctor and a panellist for The Society of London Theatre's Lawrence Olivier Awards.
Since returning to Australia in 2002, Danny has worked with various Melbourne theatre companies including ASPECT, MLOC, MOTTS, Panorama, PLOS and Beaumaris Theatre in various capacities from audition pianist to musical director. This is his fourth show with Beaumaris Theatre as musical director.
While the story of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a familiar childhood tale, the musical journey that Danny Forward has created for Dreamchild will delight music lovers of all ages.

Into The Woods
If you enjoy a witty fairytale musical combined with the reality of life's struggles, then don't miss the polished production of Into the Woods being presented by MUMCo (Monash University Musical Company) at the Drum Theatre, Dandenong Town Hall, Lonsdale St., Dandenong until August 18 at 7.30pm. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, this challenging show is given a first class interpretation by an ultra-talented cast under the stylish direction and choreography of Roman Berry. A clever touch to have Tom Beaurepaire greet patrons and then take the stage as Narrator, impressing with his beautiful speaking voice and charisma. Outstanding performances are rendered by the principal players, including Paul Watson (the compassionate Baker), Sean Harrison (the endearing Jack), Daria Ledovski, who displays good comedy-timing as the Baker's Wife and Natasha Bassett as the powerfully portrayed Witch who makes a spectacular age transition from old to young. Alexandra Clover is charmingly well cast as Cinderella, Lucy Hotchin (Little Red Ridinghood) transforms believably from innocence to adulthood, Lauren O'Dwyer entertains as Milky White, Krista Demiris is a delightful Rapunzel and Anjali Brown is an expressive Hen. David Seelig, Ryan Jacobs and Tristan Hill energetically portray the sleazy Wolf and later appear as Cinderella's Prince, Steward and Rapunzel's Prince respectively. Emily Nathan (Jack's Mother), Sarah Davies (Cinderella's Mother/Grandmother), Michelle Thomas (Lucinda), Franceska Leoncio (Florinda), Will Atkinson (Cinderella's Father), John Englezos (Mysterious Man) and Ffion Bowles (Voice of the Giant) also all present strong performances. The Dance Ensemble compliments the show well with their creatively stylised movement and routines.
Musical Director Tony Toppi has extracted fine vocal performances from his talented cast, who handle Sondheim's tricky melodies with competent musical dexterity. Staging of the production is slick and the sets are cleverly designed by Shan Blethyn. Lighting by Melissa Moldrich is effective and sound effects under the direction of Ryan Alexander appear to be spot on. The modern-day costumes designed by Narelle Henley are fun, creative and add zing. Congratulations to MUMCo. for a top show that could hold its own anywhere. Don't forget the show starts at 7.30pm. Until August 18. Bookings 9771 6666. www.mumco.org
